The most common circumstances in which you would want to step up voltage is when using an electronic device while visiting another country with different voltage standards. For instance, if traveling from most places in either North or South America to Europe, Africa or Asia, you will need a device that will step up voltage from 110 volt to 220 volt if you want to bring an 110 volt electronic device with you. In fact, most places in the world have 220 volt, 230 volt or 240 volt electrical outlets, with Japan being the most prominent exception outside of the Americas. Some countries, like Brazil and Saudi Arabia use multiple voltage standards depending on what part of the country you are in. It is always important to determine the voltage standard before plugging in an appliance in order to avoid damaging the appliance or causing an electrical shock or fire.
1.Obtain a voltage transformer or converter:
These devices are slightly different, but are all used for the purpose of either stepping up or stepping down voltage. Converters are generally used to step down voltage (i.e. from 220 volt to 110 volt) and transformers are mainly used for more complex electrical devices likes computers, televisions and other grounded devices.- When purchasing one of these conversion devices, it is necessary to ensure that the wattage rating on the conversion device is higher than the wattage rating on the electrical device that needs power. Hair dryers and some laptop computers use higher wattage, while cell phones and alarm clocks are generally rated very low.
- Be sure that the prongs on the plug match the outlet plugs that you are use. There are around 13 different plug types used globally. If your conversion device does not have a plug type that suits your situation, it is possible to buy a plug adapter that will allow your conversion device to be plugged in to the electrical outlet.
2. Connect the appliance to the conversion device.
3. Use a plug adapter: Depending on the conversion device, plug the cord (i.e. a plug adapter) that will connect the conversion device to the electrical outlet into the conversion device.
4. Plug the conversion device into the electrical outlet.
5. Turn on the electrical device.
- Most laptop battery chargers are dual voltage and therefore only require a plug adapter so that the charger will fit into the plug type of the electrical outlet.
- Converters should not be used to operate electrical appliances for long periods of time. Transformers are better suited for this purpose.
Cautions:
- Be certain that the last task completed when connecting an electronic device to an electrical outlet via a conversion device is making the connection to the electrical outlet.
- Be certain that the wattage of the device being used is less than that of the transformer.
